Meet the Water Fitness Instructors

Kathy began teaching at the Y in 2012, and currently teaches Shallow Water Aqua Fit. Before coming to the Y, she taught Aqua Fitness classes for more than 11 years at Fit for Life in Bedford. Kathy is an AEA Certified Water Fitness Instructor. She is trained to teach water fitness classes in shallow or deep water, is certified in YMCA Healthy Lifestyles and Principles, YMCA Foundations of Strength and Conditioning, and recently attended a training with nationally recognized water fitness trainer, Mary Sanders. In her spare time, Kathy enjoys reading, photography, and of course, working out!
Pam came to the Y as an Arthritis Aquatics participant fifteen years ago. She eventually moved up to taking deep water classes, and soon started teaching both types of classes! Pam says that her favorite thing about teaching at the Y is getting to know the participants. Pam says “the people in my classes are awesome, and we are like a family!” Pam is excited to be back to teaching after several years away, and she is happy to report that it’s like she never left! #lovemyymcafamily
Gloria’s lifelong practice has been Yoga, so anyone who joins her water classes can expect to be instructed on alignment and how to move using your core. Gloria appreciates using good form to stay safe and get stronger. Gloria teaches Deep Water Aqua Fit and Deep Water Arthritis Aquatics and has been a Y instructor through Yoga, Pilates, and Water Fitness for more than 30 years. She has earned certifications in Basic Fitness, Healthy Lifestyles, Working with Active Older Adults, Water Fitness, Arthritis Aquatics, Walk With Ease, Pilates, and Yoga. She recently became certified through AEA with an Aquatic Fitness Professional Certificate, continuing her quest for lifelong learning!
Being a Pisces, the water is a huge attraction for me. I have been teaching water fitness for almost 30 years in both shallow and deep formats and love the support and resistance that the water provides.” Gayle is certified through AEA/Arthritis Foundation to teach Arthritis Aquatics classes and is a certified Aquatic Fitness Professional through AEA.
Gayle’s other interests and certifications include: Total Body Strength and Pilates Certification through Total Body Gym, Schwinn cycle instructor training: MPower with Watts, Indo-Row, Senior Strength and Conditioning Specialist, Pilates and a 500 hour teacher certification in yoga.
Gayle’s motto is “Move with Joy” or “Joyfully Move.”
Jen began working at the Y in 2011. She has a Bachelor’s degree in Recreation from Franklin College and is an AEA certified water instructor and also holds certifications in Group Exercise, ACE .7, ACSM .7, ACE 1, ACSM 1, Water Fit 1. She currently teaches Shallow and Deep Water Aqua Fit classes. Jen enjoys helping members set goals and pushes them to work hard in group exercise classes so that they can lead healthier lives. She loves witnessing transformation as they build confidence and experience higher self-esteem by reaching and exceeding their goals.
Anne is originally from Olney, Illinois home of the white squirrels! She has been teaching at the Y for the last 16 years. Anne is certified through the Arthritis Foundation to teach arthritis classes in the water. She currently teaches several arthritis classes each week, as well as a more active shallow water aqua fit class. When not teaching at the Y, Anne is Parish Visitor for First United Methodist church, visiting the elderly in their homes and in the hospital. Anne’s goal in life whether teaching or visiting is to make each day as happy and healthy as possible. She enjoys the interaction with her participants in class and has seen first-hand how helpful the classes are for her participants not only for their health, but also in building new friendships.
Adrienne is an instructor in Water Fitness at the Y (Shallow Water and Deep Water Aqua Fit). Adrienne believes that if you find a workout you enjoy you will find the time to make it a priority. She also feels strongly that our workouts should stimulate our mind and body, and challenge us in a way that will encourage us to be our best selves in order to get the most out of life!
Kim began her journey as a group exercise instructor at the Y by training in-house to teach water fitness classes. Kim says she was trained “by some of the best instructors in the business!” Since then, she has trained to teach Total Body Fitness, Zumba, Zumba Gold, and Aqua Zumba. She participates regularly in continuing education classes at national fitness conferences and is certified through AEA and Zumba. Having discovered for herself the benefits of regular and varied exercise, Kim is committed to assisting individuals in their efforts to stay fit no matter what their age—and to have FUN while doing so!
Shellie has been teaching at the YMCA for more than 5 years and loves teaching group exercise classes. She teaches a wide variety of classes, including TRX, Bootcamp, Insanity, Cycle-In, Power Pump, Total Body Fitness, and other cardio-based classes. She also teaches water fitness, including Aqua Fit Deep, Aqua Fit Shallow, and Deep Water Running. In addition to her teaching role, Shellie serves as the TRX Team Captain, offering training, coaching and leadership to other TRX instructors on staff. Shellie is also a certified personal trainer through NCCPT and works with a variety of clients.
Jennifer has been leading group exercise at the YMCA for 2 years. She has a degree in exercise science and is an ACE Certified Group Fitness Instructor and AEA Certified Aquatics Instructor. Jennifer loves helping others on their own health and fitness journey and showing them that exercise can be fun. When she is not at the Y she is spending time with her husband and three children.
Jeff serves as the Aquatics Coordinator at the YMCA’s Northwest Branch, Jeff Albertson is a former Deep Sea diver, Survival Instructor and pilot rescue (SAR) swimmer for the U.S. Navy. As a Physical Training petty officer for various Special Operations and survival command’s Jeff earned his ACSM Exercise Leader Certification, as well as a Master Training specialist designation as a Survival Instructor (Open Ocean Focus). His Other Accomplishments include Powerlifting (World championship competitor 1999), Triathlon (All Distance’s Sprint-Ironman), semi-pro football (Linebacker, Bloomington Rattlers 1996) Bodybuilding (3rd place Miramar Classic 1989 San Diego California, AAU Mr. America Qualifier). His interests also extend to the arts where he has earned his union card (SAG-AFTRA) as a professional actor and stuntman. Jeff now lives in Bedford, Indiana with his wife of 32 years and has four children. He has been teaching and coaching for more than 28 years.
Maggie is an ACE Certified Group Fitness Instructor and AEA Certified Aquatics Instructor. Maggie received her BS in Psychology from UW Madison and a Masters of Public Health (MPH) from IU. She has been teaching since March 2016 and has been an avid group exercise participant since 2005. In her spare time she enjoys reading and watching sports - especially Big Ten and Packer football.
Claudia has been a member of the YMCA for almost 40 years in 3 different states, 5 different YMCA’s. She was a registered nurse for 39 years, Certified Operating Room Nurse for 25 years. Furthermore, she was a captain in the US Army Nurse Corps, activated for Persian Gulf War 1 (Dessert Storm). Additionally, Claudia was a Judo Competitor and taught Junior Judo to kids ages 7-10 & 11-14 years of age. Claudia is currently a Wellness Coach and instructs Morning Mix and Aqua Fit Light and Easy. She is currently working towards obtaining a National Group Ex Certification.
Amy is an ACE Certified Group Fitness Instructor, AEA Certified Aquatics Instructor and an ACE Certified Personal Trainer. She is also certified in RIPPED, P90X and Schwinn Indoor Cycling. She holds a degree in Health and Fitness Management and a Master’s Degree in Health Promotion. Amy has been teaching classes for the past 12 years and loves leading participants through a fun yet challenging workout. She has been with the Monroe County YMCA since 2015. In her spare time, you will find Amy signing up for running events, reading and hanging out with her husband and two children.
