Yoga Workshop: Balance in Motion: Tai Chi and Chi Kung

Tai Chi and Chi Kung are ancient Chinese arts of movement that are used today to nurture physical health and calmness of mind. Their simple movements promote strength and agility, improve circulation and heart-lung function, and help to reduce stress and improve concentration. This workshop will introduce the principles and practices of both forms of exercise through a selection of classic movements. Time will be given to learning the forms, techniques, and nuances that make Tai Chi and Chi Kung so effective. Please wear loose, comfortable clothing.
About the Instructors:
Madeleine Gonin started her T’ai Chi Ch’uan training at Indiana University in 1997. She was drawn to Tai Chi for its stress relief and other health benefits, but soon fell in love with the martial arts applications of this art as well. She enjoys practicing the body mechanics that are emphasized in Grandmaster William C.C. Chen’s form and sharing these in the balance, short and sword form classes that she teaches. She was certified in T’ai Chi Ch’uan in 2002 through New School T’ai Chi Ch’uan (Bloomington, IN) and in 2004 through Grandmaster William C.C. Chen (New York). She received her Diploma from Grandmaster Chen in 2014. Madeleine is currently working on her Ph.D. in Human Performance (Motor Learning) so enjoys finding new ways to teach these intricate and graceful movements that everyone can benefit from. Madeleine works at IU as an Instructional technology consultant.
Kathleen Bethell first became interested in tai chi and chi kung in 2002 for health. She has been studying and practicing both ever since. In 2005, she earned a certificate in chi kung through the Tai Chi Wellness certification program run by Jody Curley. From 2006-2010, she taught tai chi-chi kung at the Monroe County YMCA, and in 2017 returned to teach chi kung for balance. Kathleen continues her study of Grandmaster William C.C. Chen’s 60-Movements tai chi form, and practices with Master Charles Pearce at New School Tai Chi Ch’uan in Bloomington. In spring and fall, she volunteers at an adult day center where she leads a class in chi kung exercise for people with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia.
