ADMINISTRATION & HELP
I have undergraduate degrees in early childhood education and kinesiology, and a graduate degree in early childhood leadership. In the 20+ years I’ve worked in the field, I’ve worked as a teacher of young children, an administrator, and as a college educator at both the community college and university levels. I’ve taught at licensed early childhood programs for the Department of Justice, the Pentagon, and the University of Maryland. In addition, currently I sit on the advisory board for the Education Department at Ivy Tech, Bloomington, and on both the local and state boards for the National Association for the Education of Young Children. In all of my work, I am committed to creating high-quality programs for young children. In my free time, I enjoy gardening, reading, attending local theater productions, shopping in downtown Bloomington.
I am excited to be the Business Coordinator for the Center for Children and Families. I have 7 years’ previous experience working in a childcare center as a director. I also have my Child Development Associate Certificate. My hobbies include spending time with my 3 daughters, walking, and shopping.
Meet the Chef and Teachers
Chris Saligoe, Chef
Hello, I am Chris Saligoe, Child Care Chef for Monroe County YMCA NW, and I'm thrilled to be here!
I have been working in food service for about 20 years as a cook and manager. For the past 15 years this has been almost exclusively in natural food groceries (1.5 years at Lucky's & 13.5 years with Bloomingfoods). During that time my knowledge of products, techniques, and nutrition expanded dramatically, with a large emphasis focused on food safety and catering to many different individual needs.
I believe that a high quality, well-rounded diet plays a crucial role in our holistic health, and I feel fortunate to help set a solid foundation with children. I find great value in local, organic, and seasonal options, and am also excited to introduce foods from many other cultures. I always look forward to serving the kids here, and visiting with them- their direct feedback helps make this job really fun!
My incredible partner Kate and I have two equally incredible kids- Izzy and Max. We love hiking together, visiting caves, making food (of course), arts and crafts, reading books, generally being silly, and visiting with family and friends.
I have been in the field of Early Childhood Education for nearly four years. Before coming to the YMCA I was with Child and Youth Services of the Army at Camp Atterbury. In the Spring of 2013 I received a certificate in Child Development Associate from Ivy Tech. I am currently pursing my associate’s degree in Early Childhood Education at Ivy Tech. I hold several certificates of training in the field of Child Development. In my free time, I enjoy spending time with my son and family, being outdoors, and taking mini-vacations.
Hi, my name is Michelle Axsom. I have been in the field of Early Childhood Education since High School. In 2003 I began my career as an Early Childhood Educator at Head Start. Over the years, I have watched a multitude of children and families grow. It has become so much of a passion watching and encouraging these families. In the future, I hope to continue my education, and better serve the families in our community.
I was born and raised in Bedford, IN. I received my Associate in Early Childhood Education from Ivy Tech in 2015, and am currently pursuing my Bachelor’s from Saint-Mary-of-the-Woods. I have been working at the Center for Children and Families since July 2014, where I have had the privilege to be part of a fantastic team of teachers and administrators. I am incredibly excited and happy to be able to work with children, using my knowledge and experiences to support and guide them. I live with my husband and my spirited five-year-old son, Max. I love bright colors and using copious amounts of glitter, as well as reading and rolling around in dirt.
I have worked as a caregiver since I was 16 years old and have been a Performing Arts Director, a Baby and Me Teacher, and worked in a group home for adults with challenges. I am currently in school for my degree in Early Childhood Education at Ivy Tech. I am from California and I currently live in Bloomington with my dog, Rose, while my husband is deployed with the Army. I enjoy being in nature and love to share it with the children.
Hello, my name is Kristie Rundell. As a child, my aunt drove a bus for the local Head Start program, and I knew even then that I wanted to teach young children. I earned my Bachelor’s Degree in Human Development/Family Studies and Education from Indiana University in 2012. I’ve been a teacher/caregiver for about 4 years now and love to see the children’s smiling faces every day! I live with my husband, Craig, and hope to start our own family in the future. I started my undergrad degree in 2006 in music performance (instrumental) and later transferred to Indiana University Bloomington to complete my degree in studio art in 2011. As a student I worked at the Boys and Girls Club of Ellettsville as the Art Director (through AmeriCorps). After college I traveled as a migrant farm worker with my husband Greg and worked seasonally on farms in Colorado, Kentucky, West Virginia, Maryland and Indiana. After farming for a few years, I decided that I wanted to work with children again and applied to work at the YCCF. I have been at the YCCF for over a year and love it! My future goals include opening a farm-based preschool and getting my masters in a teaching/design field.
