At the Y, strengthening community is our cause. Through group exercise classes, youth programs, swim lessons, adult health programs, and more, we aim to build a healthier Monroe County. Every day, we work side-by-side with our neighbors to make sure that everyone, regardless of age, income, or background, has the opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive.

George Williams launches the YMCA movement in London as a volunteer. The purpose was to create a space for young men to remain safe from the temptations and terrible conditions Williams saw in his job as a draper.
The YMCA of Monroe County was founded as a Christian organization, serving the students of Indiana University.
Our Y moved off IU's campus and opened headquarters on W. 17th St., providing outreach programs to better serve the entire Bloomington community.
The Southeast YMCA pool opened at 2125 S. Highland Avenue on December 1, 1980.
After years of enthusiastic volunteerism, generous support from Cook Groups, Inc. and a community support-a-thon allowed us to build a 50,000-square-foot facility. January 11, 1981 marks the grand opening of the entire Southeast facility.
1985 & 1995
Two expansions added 34,600 square-feet to the Southeast Y, providing more family, program, and special-needs space.
A major renovation expanded the Wellness Center and added a multipurpose room and a yoga studio.
A capital campaign was publicly launched to raise funds for a brand new YMCA on the northwest side of Bloomington, a renovation and new pool for the Southeast facility, and the construction of a new Gymnastics Center next to the Southeast Y.
The Gymnastics Center opened next to the Southeast Y.
The Multipurpose Pool opened at the Southeast Y in February, and the Northwest Y opened in November.
In 2015, The Herald-Times chose our Monroe County YMCA as the Reader's Choice favorite Health Club/Gym.
Our Northwest YMCA celebrated its fifth birthday with a birthday bash open to the entire Monroe County community.
In October of 2019, we were thrilled to learn our Northwest YMCA won the year’s Ellettsville Chamber Award of Excellence for a large business! “Established in 2014, the Chamber's Award of Excellence is given to a business or organization that provides an outstanding product or service in Ellettsville… demonstrate[ing] excellence in business affairs, while adding to the quality of life in the Ellettsville community.”
Our Monroe County Y also won first place in the Herald-Times Reader's Choice Awards for "Best Gym" and "Best Health/Wellness Facility," as well as second place for "Best Yoga Studio."
Our Southeast Y celebrated its 40th anniversary in Monroe County!
